Back to solid foods . . . for the moment.

“I feel like I’ve been out to sea for a month. On a dingy. Or, on a garbage scow. With beer cans being thrown at me.”

I’m gonna LOL because I’m happy to say, on Day 8, HE TURNED THE TV ON!!!! He seems to have “turned the corner” last night and was able to stay awake for a few hours to visit with Cheyenne & Shelby.

Its been a tremendous struggle to get him to eat. It’s really too soon to be dependent on the feeding tube and I was getting desperate to find “anything” he could tolerate.

He still can’t eat very much but at least he is trying to eat different foods. Everything he asks for, I go get. Most of the time, he would take a single bite, shake his head and say, “No, I can’t!” Here is the list of what’s been a success and what’s been rejected.

SUCCESSFUL FOODS:

  • WATERMELON (he’s ate an entire watermelon in 3 days)
  • MALTO-O-MEAL made by the Amazing Addison! Every day. Multiple times a day.
  • Top-Ramen with extra broth
  • Chocolate pudding
  • Jello
  • cucumbers
  • Coke Zero (Please no judgment. Kevin is a daily coffee drinker. Only way to give him caffeine right now. I think he was also having caffeine withdrawals. Note: He doesn’t think so- LOL)

Tolerated foods:

  • Nutter-Butter Patties (The break through food. Always been his favorite. His first food to keep down but he said it didn’t taste good and hasn’t eaten it since.)
  • mashed potatoes (first try he threw up, a few days later he said “tolerable”)
  • Scrambled egg (rejected twice, “tolerated” once)
  • Plain toast (asks more than once but can only eat two bites)
  • crackers (has choked down 2- now won’t eat them)
  • Arizona Ginseng & Honey Tea
  • Green Salad w/Blue Cheese (surprised me)

Rejected foods:

  • COFFEE (he’s normally a daily morning, 3 cup’a Joe drinker)
  • French Toast
  • Jamba Juice (thought this would be good because he craves watermelon but nope)
  • Carl’s Jr. French Toast Sticks
  • McDonald’s reg hamburger, French fries, or nuggets
  • Fruit Yard fried chicken
  • cantaloupe
  • Peking pork
  • Fried rice
  • Arizona regular ice tea
  • Pizza hut deep dish pizza

Talking to the nutritionist about sugar feeding cancer and his diet, she said right now is not the time to change his diet. He needs any and all calories he can get orally to keep his weight and immune system up. Later, we will probably be very dependent on the feeding tube. After he is recovering, we will start adding back foods and can his likes and wants will be very different. Who knows? Maybe he will LOVE bell peppers then!

In times of desperation, you pull out all the stops and you take drastic measures.

  1. Anything he can eat and tolerate, its worth a try no matter what it is. I can bring food out to ya, just holler !

Paul just asked me to message you, any appointments for Kevin that he can help with to take him – he would love to be able to help with. His schedule is flexible, and we know you are trying to run your business. So much of this are are helpless with to help, but we have time to give and would be honored to be there for you both.

We love you guys . Hugs.
